 | Itunes and Napster are Blessings to Independent Labels and Artists
18 Dec 2004
Take for example the hot selling party song "Party all night" by Dre; here is a song that has enjoyed huge success on Itunes and Napster without a music video and without any major airplay. Numerous users of Itunes and Napster seem to have 'Party all Night' by Dre on their playlist. Itunes users are able to check out other users" playlist, so if a lot of fans like a song and add it to their playlist, it increases the chances of other users knowing about the song. DJ Smooth who produced the instrumental for "Party all night" hopes that the digital model of music distribution will soon become the norm. "It is great when fans can tell other fans about great music, instead of relying on MTV, BET and major radio stations which are all pretty much controlled by the major record companies." We can see why DJ Smooth would have these sentiments, because his instrumentals which is called "Any Type War" is also one of the hottest selling instrumentals on Itunes and Napster. DJ Smooth is also the producer of the very controversial song "Stepping Razor" by Bookman. The producer who produced couple of the tracks on the hot new "18 Karat Reggae Gold" and has also worked with hip-hop and reggae artist such as Big Mook, Exile and Dre says the only thing he would change about Itunes or Napster is the priority that they give to independent labels compare to the major record labels. "Currently our latest release 18 Karat Reggae Gold has yet to be up on either Itunes or Napster even though release from major artists that came out after ours release has already been up." Despite the fact that independents seems to be First in Last up, the DJ has nothing but high praises for these digital distribution companies and hopes physical music stores will soon be a thing of the past. "When this happens there will be a level playing field, it will be more difficult for the major record labels to force what they believe are hits unto the songs, the power will be in the hands of the fans and a hit song will depend on the merit of its content and not the marketing and promotional dollars behind it. Currently independent labels cannot afford to have their music in a lot of retail stores, thanks to digital distribution pretty soon we will not need to." |
